SafetyVantage is pleased to announce the release of their Marijuana in the Workplace awareness online training course. This course was developed to help organizations prepare for the legalization of marijuana in July 2018 by informing employers and employees of worker rights, the hazards of impairment and controls.

While the controversies around marijuana use remain, what doesn’t is any uncertainty about its legalization for recreational use in Canada. Coming into force in July 2018, the changing legislation sheds new light on an old issue – the question of impairment in the workplace. Impairment is the deterioration of an individual’s judgement, function, ability, or quality of work, including a decrease in their physical ability, coordination, and safe behaviours, due to their condition. Because impairment presents such an overarching danger in the workplace, it’s important to know how to combat and control it effectively, especially when new impairing drugs become legal for recreational use. Workers already have questions about use before or after work, during breaks and over the weekends or during vacation – and the reality is that for many with safety sensitive jobs none of these may be permitted.

The course is packed with industry insight, best practices, and an array of applicable information to understand marijuana and the concerns it brings to the workplace, including:

  • Introduction to recreational marijuana and the workplace
  • Understanding marijuana impairment
  • Controlling impairment hazards
  • Workplace rights, roles, and responsibilities
  • Impairment testing
