Joint Work Site HS Committee / HS Representative Training

This course meets all requirements for training of Health and Safety Committee (HSC) and Health and Safety Representatives (HSR). The course was developed and is delivered by the AASP, an approved Designated Trainer for the mandatory HSC and HS Representatives training.

Under Alberta OHS Act Part 3 all employers that employ more than 4 workers are required to have one or more employees complete this training.

During the HSC and HS Representative’s first year on the committee or as a representative the HSC/HSR MUST complete this eight hours of mandatory training.

The learning objectives of this course are:

  • Explain the purpose of the OHS Act, Regulation, and Code
  • Explain legislative requirements to determine if Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committees and/or Health and Safety Representatives are required
    Identify the unique needs for HSC/HS representatives on multi-employer work sites
  • Describe the Internal Responsibility System:
    • Explain the three basic rights of all workers
    • Apply procedures regarding right to refuse unsafe work under specific circumstances
    • Explain the prohibition against discriminatory action
  • Summarize and describe the duties, roles and responsibilities of a health and safety committee and/or health and safety representative.
    Explain the purpose of committee’s rules and procedure (Terms of Reference):
    • Summarize training requirements for HSCs and HS representatives
    • Explain the purpose of analyzing minutes from committee meetings
  • Explain the HSC/HS Representative’s role in hazard identification and control
  • Explain the HSC/HS Representative’s role in workplace inspections
  • Explain the HSC/HS Representative’s role in incident investigations
  • Create appropriate HSC recommendations for the employer
  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of the HSC’s and HS Representative in addressing workplace violence and harassment
  • List the traits of an effective HSC and explain the purpose of conducting an evaluation of the committee’s effectiveness

To successfully complete the course, the learner has 3 attempts to achieve 80% or higher on the exam. Upon completion the learner receives a Certificate of Achievement.
